Background

The Helge Boes Cup was initiated in the Fall of the 2012 season to serve as the mechanism of determining the Washington Premier League Premier Division champion.  Prior to the advent of the Helge Boes Cup, the regular season WPL Premier Division winner would claim the title of WPL champion.  At the request of team captains the Helge Boes Cup was created, pitting the top four teams in the final regular standings against each other in a single elimination Cup to determine the league winner. 

About Helge Philipp Boes

The name Helge Boes was chosen as homage to a fallen hero of the WPL, Helge Phillip Boes.  Helge Philipp Boes was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States, where he graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Southern University and cum laude from Harvard Law School before settling in the DC area.  On the weekends, Helge Boes was a standout player for Fados Irish Pub Conquistadores.  A tremendous athlete who excelled on the field and in particular between the nets, he was a cherished team member with an infectious positive attitude.   After 9/11, Boes was moved to quit his lucrative law career at Latham & Watkins and enlisted in the United States special forces, ultimately landing a role as an operations officer for the CIA’s Counter Terrorist Center.  On February 5, 2003, Boes was killed while participating in United States counterterrorism efforts in eastern Afghanistan.  He was the second CIA officer to die as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the first being paramilitary officer Mike Spann on November 25, 2001.  Helge was survived by his wife, Cindy Boes, and his parents Roderich and Monika Boes.
